Yesterday, we kicked off the first of four Scarborough & District tournaments, welcoming five local schools for a competitive afternoon of rugby. Malton, Norton, Whitby, Scalby, and Ryedale all battled hard for Year 9 honours, while Lady Lumley’s unfortunately had to withdraw due to travel issues.
Malton & Ryedale benefitted from strong support by Malton & Norton’s U14 players, while Whitby and Scalby had club players from Guisborough and Scarborough, respectively. Despite having only one club player, Norton showed impressive aggression and grew into the tournament, with several players catching the eye—ones we’ll be keen to help develop into future clubmen alongside Mr. Triffitt and Mr. Morris.
Malton fielded a team with recognisable young talents and some seriously fast runners—hopefully, this taste of rugby will encourage them to explore the club game. Ryedale started strong, dominating early games, but Whitby’s resilient defense proved too much in the final match, securing a 2-0 win.
Next Thursday, we look forward to hosting the Year 10 tournament, followed by Year 7 and Year 8 competitions. A huge thank you to the schools, players, and all involved in making the event a success.
Roll on next week!
