How to Coach the preparation to tackle

Tackling in rugby is about bringing the other player to the ground safely and stopping them from running with the ball.

Here’s how to get ready to tackle:

  1. Get in the Right Position:

    • Stay Low: Bend your knees and keep your body low. This helps you stay strong and balanced.
    • Eyes on the Waist: Keep your eyes on the player's waist, not the ball, so you can track where they’re going.
    • Arms Ready: Hold your arms out, ready to wrap around the player when you make contact.
  2. Approach with Control:

    • Run Straight: Run towards the player you’re going to tackle, keeping your body steady.
    • Small Steps: As you get close, take smaller steps to control your speed and direction.
  3. Make the Tackle:

    • Wrap and Squeeze: When you reach the player, wrap your arms around their legs or waist and squeeze tight.
    • Head to the Side: Keep your head to one side of their body, not in front, to avoid getting hurt.
    • Drive with Your Legs: Use your leg muscles to push and bring them to the ground.
  4. Finish the Tackle:

    • Fall with Them: As they go down, keep holding on, and fall with them. This helps make sure they stay down.
    • Get Up Quickly: Once the player is on the ground, let go, get back on your feet, and be ready for the next play.

All these coaching points should be encourage at every stage.

Always remember, tackling is about playing fair and keeping everyone safe. Coach these steps & develop a strong safe tackler in rugby!
