An instant Malton Classic on Boxing Day

What an epic Boxing Day encounter that was — one that will live long in the memory and surely earn its place as a true Malton Classic.

Norton looked to have the game under control, leading 20–7 with just 25 minutes remaining. But Malton showed incredible grit and determination, mounting a stirring comeback to turn the game on its head and open up an 11-point lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Norton refused to lie down. With three minutes left on the clock they clawed the deficit back to just four points and pushed relentlessly until the final whistle. They had several chances to snatch victory outright, but some stout, disciplined defending from Malton ensured the Highlanders held firm and defended their Boxing Day crown.

Malton head coach Lummers was quick to praise both sides:

“Well done to all the lads who laced up — proper game 💪. Highlanders 31, Swampies 27.”

Norton’s Stu echoed the sentiment, highlighting how encouraging it was to see the next generation fully buying into the annual festive fixture, while the huge crowd were treated to a fantastic game of rugby. It was great to see our regular players and supporters standing shoulder to shoulder with more distant friends returning from all over the country or some the world.

And from us — thank you to everyone who joined us this afternoon. Great occasions are made by great people, and you all added something special 💪🏻.

Have a great New Year, and we’ll see you all again very soon
