Old Crossleyans – Malton & Norton

12th November 2022

RF

First half Ill-discipline cost Malt.

Saturday we travelled over to the West Riding to tackle old foes Old Crossleyans.  Turning up in a rush after the amount of road works in the Calder valley the lads headed straight out into their warm up with two changes from the named team due to illness.

On one of the smaller pitches in the league Malt attacked downhill with the sun to their backs struggled to keep possession in the first half mainly down to high penalty count we couldn't keep in check.

An early breakdown infringement led to a long penalty kick to get Crocs on the board. 0 – 3  We bounced back and James Bulmer struck a penalty of our own to even the score. 3 – 3

Around 10 minutes in, a first phase try for the returning Tom Foan after a nice move by Stu Collins to give him space. Conversion 3 – 10

After that we didn’t see much ball for the next 20 / 25 minutes which really killed our early momentum. Crocs ran in 2 tries and struck 2 penalties missing 2 in that time. 23 – 10

Once we regathered our senses and started listening to the ref’s instructions at the breakdown we eventfully got hold of the ball and marched down field for Nick Salisbury to cross James Bulmer adding the extras. 23 – 17

But problems arose once again we lost Ted and Tom Foan to yellow’s despite bemusement from both him and the ref, only finding out after the ref mistook him for another player. 26 – 17

The final play of the half was a quickly taken tap penalty from their nippy 9 who dived over and the conversion from the touchline.

33 – 17 mountain to climb.

Starting the second half with 13 players didn’t help one bit, a show and go after five minutes of pressure allowed their centre to cross and extend their lead to 40 – 17

Restored to the full 15 we started keeping the ball which allowed us to make inroads but without much end product, twenty minutes of line breaks and big hits were repelled until we were able to grab a try under their sticks, Tom Foan dotted it down for his second of the game, Bully added the extras. 40 – 24 with around 15 minutes remained.

With both teams trying to find territory, Crocs fell foul to the ref and started to give penalties away, with us chasing the game we kicked to corners rather than the posts but weren’t able to secure another score even just to grab a bonus point.

In the final minutes Crocs kick a pen from the halfway to finish the game 43 – 24.

Was a bad day for our lads but we’ve had them before and bounced back.
