Scarborough 12 - 19 Malton & Norton
James Knock.
March 7th 2020 seems a long time ago with a forgettable league game at Kendal, only rescued by a memorable stop over in the company of two Acker Bilk lookalikes, photos available!
Since then one or two changes have occurred at the Gannock most notably the departure of coach Creber and the hiring of former Bath, Bristol,Worcester,Newcastle, England Saxons and U21 midfield player Alex Crockett as his replacement. Following the suspension of league rugby during the pandemic this was the first opportunity for the 1st team squad to demonstrate what they have learnt under his guidance.
Twenty Eight players came to Scarborough to partake in four 20 minute sessions with players rotated at the breaks. Under adaptive laws which basically meant normal rugby less scrummaging, a tap ball in place of a put in at set piece was used. This ensured fast rugby with minimal stoppages, much to the delight of any tight five forwards present on the pitch. Rather than form a standing scrum at break down players were strung across the park which gave less room for manoeuvre at restarts and ensured some enterprising play from the backs.
It was pleasing to see under the new coach some youngsters given the chance to display their talents and pace and I look forward to seeing them in September. Of note in this first outing admittedly with the adaptive laws, was the line speed that I understand is one of the coach's main ideas that he is trying to inculcate in the players mindset. It was noticeably sharper than in previous seasons.
I am sure that this is the first of many ideas and drills we shall see with a fresh approach at coaching level, and if the playing staff listen and act on them we can look forward to some entertaining and enjoyable rugby in the future.
Malton ran out 19-12 "winners" on the night.
Scorers: Charlie Corner, 5
James Bulmer, 5+2
Penalty try, 7
Next week we entertain Scarborough at the Gannock and our Ladies squad will also feature on the card. Please check the club website for details or if in doubt phone Russell Stead.
