Our Senior Awards Evening was held Friday evening with just over a hundred attendee’s, pre drinks were happily encouraged from Six thirty despite the evening not officially kicking off until seven thirty.  A grand two course meal was washed down with plenty of ale with the regular rugby drinking games “in play” both Lummers and Meggo suffered at the hands of the strict “howzat” rules.  Thanks must go out to Christine and Lana with help of their staff on the night for keeping the fantastic food & beery beverages coming.

Excellent speeches’ from Crocks with special guest Andy Goode albeit over zoom to roast James Bulmer our own Goodey for a few minutes, Stu from the trees, Norfolk Matt from the super 2s and Leah from the Marvels all summed up the upbeat atmosphere we have going on.  After these were all well received skipper stepped up to give us a rundown of the good and a not so good sides of our 1st XV squad.  After we all had a great laugh at our expense, it was time for the trophies.

Leading us off were the trees who have had very exceptional season playing 23 games in total, there winners were as follows (if I remembered correctly.)

Player of the Year - Harry Coulson

Coaches’ Player - Phil North

Players’ Player - Stu Collins

The Super 2s next up also had a great season reaching their playoff semi Final, Playing all their Merit fixture and a handful of “friendlies”. Their award winners were as follows,

Player of the Year – Harry Skaife

Coaches’ Player – Luke Humphreys

Players’ Player – Tom Barker

Andy Jakeman’s “Man of Steel” – George Turnbull

The Marvels were up next with Eddie Head leading their bit they also had four awards to give out.

Player of the Year – Nic Pinder

Coaches’ Player – Laura Dishman

Players’ Player – Olivia Ward

Coaches’ Standing Ovation (grafting on the pitch, I think) – Heidi Murray

The 1s were last up of the team’s section, Crocks and Triff gave the awards to

Player of the Year – Nick Salisbury

Coaches’ Player – Will Hughes

Players Player – Will Dunn

With Solly, desperate to get on the karaoke after his big win.  The club wide awards of the evening were the only things left to do.

Veteran of the Year – Stu Collins 3rd XV skipper

Young Player of the Year – Jess Scholefield First senior season and first time we think this award has been won by a player from our Womens’ team.

Malton and Norton Silver Plate Clubman of the Year – Pat Lane for his outstanding contribution towards the growth of the club.

As tradition upon completing 100 1st XV games a player will receive a centurion tie from the club and now a yard of ale – John Lumley stepped up and took ownership of his.  He now has “retired indefinitely and will block Triff ‘s number Tuesday to Saturday if he tries to get me to play again” his words not mine.  100 and out for John well done mush.

With Solly still itching to grab the mic for a sing,  we had one thing left to do the last race to the bottom of the evening. A veteran drinker with his yard Lummer against Jess and her pint (an 18 year old back row Marvels player who hates ale.)  There really should have only been one winner, but after the chunder bus threatened to visit the stage Lummers was knocked for six by Jess who saw hers off in flash.

Once everything was signed and sealed and the night was complete the karaoke went into full swing. Belting versions of Mack the Knife from Sol and truly, madly, deeply from Foth kicked things off followed by the former Globe crew taking over.

Thanks to all who attended you all contributed to the night and we’ll be planning more “club nights” moving into next season.  Again thanks Christine and her bar staff over the year, Lana and her kitchen staff for keeping us all in tip top condition.  JR, Johnsy despite their paddy’s for the sorting of the evening, President Pat for making the evening run smoothly on stage and sharing a  taxi yam.

Reminder buy your summer ball tickets ASAP, the evening is bigger but as equally fun than last night, the more players we can get there the more chance Lummers has of beating someone in a race to the bottom.  Lastly we are struggling to come to terms with Salisbury winning the player of the year, if you also are and want to talk please call the Samaritans on 03300945717.

Rest up we’ll back again in July to go again, please don’t all retire or have babies if you can help it next season you can only get better.
